How to put a bunk bed together (a step by step guide)
When you were younger, there was almost certainly a time that you dreamt of falling asleep in a bunk bed. Even now, most children love the idea of a bunk bed and they can be a great choice for small bedrooms or instances where two or more children have to share. However, aside from children’s bedrooms, bunk beds also make the ideal choice if you're running a hostel that wants to maximise space.
If you're thinking about ordering a bunk bed, there are many choices online. However, most require self-assembly. Whether you're a DIY expert or not, it can be difficult to know how to put together a bunk bed frame. As with anything, it is always best to be prepared. In this article, we’ll discuss exactly how to put a bunk bed together, and some reasons why bunk beds make a great bed frame.
What are the benefits of using bunk beds?
If you're thinking about installing a bunk bed in your children’s bedroom or are planning to add some to your hostel, here are some of the greatest benefits of using bunk beds:
They’re cost-effective: If you have two children sharing a room, investing in one bunk bed over two single beds means that you can save money in the long run, meaning that you can spend the money you save on other items for your children, like toys and soft furnishings.
If you're running a hostel, it is important to keep costs low. Bed bunks are a cheap way to ensure that your clients have the space they need to sleep.
They’re space-saving: If you live in a small home and need to make the most out of every inch of space, bunk beds are the answer. Because they are two beds in one, they save valuable floor space.
Adding bunk beds to your hostel can help you save space while also allowing you to host more guests and make more money.

How to put a bunk bed together
If you're thinking about or have recently ordered a bunk bed, you need to ensure that you know how to put it together. Although building a bunk bed is relatively simple, you may require some assistance if you're not DIY savvy or you have never built one before.
Here is a step-by-step guide to building a bunk bed:
1. Get the right tools
Although most bunk beds will come with all the necessary parts you need to build them, some will not. Therefore, it's best to be prepared with a range of tools. If your bunk bed has already arrived, the instructions will give you an idea of the tools you need to put it together.
However, if you are waiting for your order to arrive, here are some of the tools you might need to prepare:
• Screwdrivers, in varying sizes. • Spanners, in varying sizes. • Rubber Hammer (just in case). • Spare nails, screws, nuts and bolts (just in case).
2. Read the instructions
Before you begin any construction work, make sure that you thoroughly read and understand the instructions you're given. This will ensure that you don’t make any mistakes throughout the assembly process.
3. Construct the bottom bunk
Begin by setting all of the pieces out and working out which parts belong to the bottom bunk. Next, attach the railings to the headrest and footboard feet using the screws and bolts. Be sure to check that the bolts are securely fastened so that they won’t fall out when used. After this, slide the slats into the bottom bunk bed’s structure. There are usually pre-drilled holes to make this easy.
4. Construct the top bunk
The safest way to construct the top bunk bed is to construct it on the floor and then place it on top of the bottom bunk. The construction of this is almost exactly the same as the bottom bunk. Once you have finished placing all the rails in the appropriate slots, place the slats into the bed frame and ensure they are firmly secure.
5. Add the guard rails
Guard rails are the most important part of a bunk bed, so read this step carefully. Once you have assembled the top bunk, correctly fasten the guard rails on all sides of the bunk, ensuring that the nuts and bolts are properly screwed in and they are not loose.
6. Fasten the top bunk onto the bottom bunk
With the help of a second person, you can carefully lift the top bunk over the bottom. Making sure the holes are aligned, carefully slide the rails into the slots. Once these have been put in place, use connector pins or screws to carefully connect the two beds and fix them in place.
7. Attach the ladder
The ladder is, arguably, the second most important part of any bunk bed and ensuring that it's secured correctly can ensure that no accidents happen. Using the hooks provided, bind the ladder to the top and bottom bunk and secure it with screws.
8. Check your work
Once you have finished assembling the bunk beds, check your work over to make sure that all screws are fitted properly and that the bunk bed is sturdy.
