4 signs you need a new mattress
Your trusty mattress may have sat unobtrusively atop your bed for years, cradling you to sleep every night. However, mattresses eventually come to the end of their lifespan and need replacing. When your mattress is no longer working for you, you may start to see some signs creeping in to alert you that it is time for a change. So how do you know when you need to replace your old mattress with a new one?
Your mattress shows wear and tear
Of course, visible wear and tear to a mattress is probably the most obvious sign that you're in need of a new one. If there are rips in the mattress, it looks dirty and grubby or it feels lumpy and uncomfortable when you lie in bed, then it might just need replacing. What's more, if your mattress is creaky or it feels like there are detached springs inside it, then it may be time to start searching for your ideal replacement.
You are experiencing allergies
Mattresses often collect dust and skin cells that remain in the fabric layer of the mattress. When you have had your old mattress for a long time, the build-up of dust mites and skin can cause allergies to flare up. You may experience unpleasant symptoms such as sneezing, wheezing or coughing, signalling that a new mattress should be on the horizon.
It no longer provides the correct level of support
Sometimes, when mattresses start to age, they can sag. Even if you regularly turn your mattress, it might eventually suffer this fate. What's more, if your body has changed by losing or gaining a significant amount of weight then the tension level of the mattress might be wrong for your new shape. As a general rule, heavier people can benefit from firmer mattresses such as the extra-firm Brick mattress. Firmer mattresses tend to give a higher level of support.
You've had your mattress for a prolonged length of time
According to the Sleep Council, you should replace your mattress every seven or eight years. Even if you are not actively experiencing any problems with the mattress, there may be underlying issues that you have not recognised but will eventually start to openly manifest. Preempting problems and opting for a heavy-duty mattress that will give you many years of usage is an excellent way to ensure that you continue to sleep comfortably and wake up refreshed.
